Better Bathroom Habits for Better Health

Have you ever stopped to think about your bathroom habits & how they could be impacting your skincare?

Storage
The way you store your skincare products has a dramatic effect on how well they perform for your skin.

Chemical reactions are constantly taking place in skincare. Products stored in high temperatures, high humidity, in the light or on the vanity, can degrade quickly due to damage caused to the active ingredients in them.

Light from the sun & artificial light can affect skincare, reducing the strength of the functional ingredients. Steam can also creep in from your bath or shower if the lid is not on properly.

Solution
Always store your organic products in the fridge or a dark, cool cupboard, never over 21oC, optimum for Malano products is 4-15oC. Ensure that you screw the lids on firmly, but not over tight.

Hand Washing
It can be easy to forget to wash your hands before touching your skincare products, but it is an essential step before you begin your routine.

Your hands pick up and distribute all types of microbes when you touch things, using unwashed fingers/hands will contaminate your products and potentially cause breakouts, skin infections and irritation.

Solution
Washing and drying your hands on a clean towel before and during applying skincare is a must to help prevent cross contamination and potential microbe build up in your products.

Adding Water to Products
Water contains a vast array of harmful microbes (like bacterium) that affect your skincare products. If introduced to your skincare, these microbes reduce the quality and effectiveness of products.

They can also cause infections, breakouts and skin irritation.

Solution
To help prevent this, always make sure you dry your hands properly after washing and if need to use water, only use a good quality distilled water.

Shared Bathroom/Toilet
Bathrooms with a shared toilet can be one of the most problematic places to store your skincare products!

Not only do you need to contend with oxygen, light, heat & steam, but also faecal matter potentially contaminating any skincare products and even towels and face washers if you have them hung up (no one wants to be putting faecal matter on their skin!)

One of the worst bathroom habits is flushing the toilet with the lid up! This distributes bacteria not only into your skincare products, but anything else you have in your bathroom including towels, face washers and toothbrushes.

Solution
Make sure to flush with the lid down every time to help prevent the spread of faecal matter upon things within your bathroom that you use daily.

Towels/Face Washers
Used towels can harbour microbes and other manner of substances (yes even faecal matter) on them. Other people may have also used your towel without you knowing to dry their hands/face or wipe of sweat, dirt and other substances, so using a dirty towel when washing/drying your hands, will transfer these microbes onto your hands.

If using dirty or contaminated towels/face washers during your skincare routine, this can also cause infections, breakouts and skin irritation due to the transfer of the microbes into your skincare and/or onto your skin.

Solution
You may not be able to keep your towels 100% bacteria free but, by washing them often and using a clean towel and face washer when doing your daily skincare routine, and by making sure you change towels you use on your body regularly, you can help prevent the spread of microbes helping to prevent outbreaks and skin infections.

Extra tip; You should also wipe off your pump bottles to remove any build up of product.

It may seem like a lot more effort to store your skincare products outside of your bathroom, but to ensure you are getting the best performance out of your skincare and achieve to maximum results, it is well worth that little extra care.

If you keep your products in your bathroom, ensure the lid is completely sealed (but not screwed on too tightly as this can cause your lids to crack) to help prevent steam from getting in and help prevent bacteria build up. Also keep products in a closed cupboard to help prevent steam and faecal matter from spoiling to them.
