Wondrous Wintergreen

Wintergreen essential oil, botanical name, Gaultheria procumbens essential oil is derived from the leaves of the wintergreen plant. It is known for its refreshing aroma and numerous potential benefits. There is another species called Gaultheria fragrantissima, typically not used as much with anti-inflammatory products because it contains less methyl salicylate than procumbens. Procumbens is the strain from North America and the fragrantissima is the Asian strain. Methyl Salicylate is also available in synthetic form, but it is a lot cheaper and more readily available. We only use Gaultheria procumbens, so you can be confident that you are getting the correct potency in your products.

Some of the benefits of wintergreen essential oil include:

  • Pain relief: Wintergreen oil is often used topically to provide relief from muscle or joint pain, due to it’s analgesic constituents.
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Wintergreen oil may help reduce inflammation, making it beneficial for sore muscles or other inflammatory conditions.
  • Respiratory support: Wintergreen oil's minty aroma may help ease respiratory congestion and support clearer breathing.
  • Antimicrobial properties: Wintergreen oil has shown antimicrobial properties and may help in fighting against some infections.
  • Relaxation and stress relief: The calming scent of wintergreen oil can promote relaxation and help reduce stress and anxiety.

Some of the major chemical constituents found in wintergreen essential oil include - methyl salicylate, delta-3-carene and alpha pinene. Methyl salicylate is the primary compound responsible for the oil's characteristic scent and provides the analgesic properties. Alpha-pinene has anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator properties, and delta-3-carene is known for its potential antiviral effects.

As with any essential oil, it is essential to use wintergreen oil with caution and follow proper dilution guidelines to avoid any adverse reactions. If you have any specific health concerns or conditions, or taking medications, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before using this oil.

We use Wintergreen exclusively in our Ultra Soothe Cream. If you use Wintergreen always dilute at the correct percentage and if you are not sure, seek advice from your naturopath, aromatherapist or medical practitioner.

Until we bring you more beauties that Mother Earth provides, stay well.

Many blessings
