Volume 03 / Autumn 2025

Welcome to Autumn.

Oh, how the time has flown since Christmas. It felt like it was only a few weeks ago that we were celebrating the festive season and New Year. 2025 has started off busy and we are full steam ahead into the Autumnal season.

As you may be aware we were featured in the January/ February edition of Australian Geographic. We had a hoot with the journalist Jennifer Johnston and the photographer James Bugg. We spent a few hours talking to Jen about our story and we ventured out onto the property to give her a taste of wild crafting and harvesting for our perfume. When James and his partner came to the property for almost the full day, we welcomed them with our “welcome to land ceremony” at our fire pit. They both enjoyed it and said that it was a memorable experience. It was a blast and for anyone who checked out the photos on the online version, there was a photo with us burning the sage and adding it to our Tasmanian Whisky, so it really was a blast. More on that later, when we show you how this process is done.

We were also interviewed on the Creative Rumble Podcast by the two lovely ladies Laura and Nadia. That was a fun experience as well, no fires though. There we were able to express our creative inspirations and part of the back story about Malano, how perfume is inspired and crafted and some other key anecdotes for living an inspired and creative life.

We have a few projects on the go and the Malano Team are working hard in the background to ensure that these projects are realised in an efficient time frame and manner.

We have another 3 Cigar perfumes releasing soon. The first one will be our floral cigar, which is a stunning array of flowers and spice, that’s coming in the next week or so. The roll-on perfumes have been a hit and oh, the new oil reeds look gorgeous.

We will have some news to bring to you over the course of the next few months, as things occur, we will be sure to announce them on the socials and website, so stay tuned for another exciting year ahead!

Until next time, stay well, may peace be with and many blessings to all.

Maryka & Mase xx

Maryka Malano - a glimpse behind the scenes

"We make our perfumes the old-fashioned way" (Australian Geographic - #184 Jan/Feb 2025).

We use three main techniques of extraction as each has it's own specific advantages, for our limited edition Tasmanian perfume, with the flora being harvested from our bushland property, over a few years to minimise over harvesting.

The method of extraction we choose, is based on the type of fragrance we wish to encapsulate & the characteristics of the raw biomass used.

Today I want to share with you the process of water distillation.

So what is water distillation exactly?

We utilise water distillation using an old-style alchemical distiller, the yield is a lot smaller per distillation. Through this process steam is passed through the plant material, causing the essential oils to evaporate.

The steam & essential oil vapour are then condensed back into a liquid form, with the essential oil floating at the top of the water.

The value in using this technique, is in that it is best for plants that can withstand high temperatures. We utilise this method for blue gum eucalyptus, sage, spearmint, lavender & our prostanthera sieberi mint.

We don't use water distillation for delicate flowers such as jasmine, rose & tube rose. For these types of flora, we use the enfleurage technique.

Keep your eyes out for our posts across our social media on our enfleurage process. You can follow us on Instagram,

Tabitha. - a glimpse behind the scenes of our Creative Designer.

We have been meaning to introduce Tabitha for a while now. Where do we start with how amazing she is.

Tabitha joined the Malano family in April 2022 and has hit the ground running with some magnificent work. There is much more to come, so stay tuned for 2025, it’s going to be big!

Before coming onboard here at Malano, Tabitha spent 18 years as a Qualified Early Childhood Educator, she says, that she kind of fell into it, but we know that she did it exceptionally well. From her childhood, she was always a creative and had a passion for art, drawing and music, and in expressing her wonderful talent.

“Around 2014, I was ready for a career change. I was looking for ways to move beyond the childcare sector. So, I began my Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication (Graphic Design) and minored in Electronic Media where I could dive into my passion for art and design. For the duration of my studies, I remained in Childcare, but always knew that the day would come whereby, I would want to move into a creative role as my future career and being a part of a field where I really wanted to be and grown in for a living.

When Covid struck, I remained in the childcare sector working full time and began looking for creative work while continuing to build my art and design portfolio, all along continuing to learn about design.”

After things started to settle, we knew that Tabitha would be a perfect fit for the Malano family and it was time to say goodbye to her childcare career and a massive “HELLO!” to being our Creative Designer.

“When the opportunity came along to work for Malano, I couldn’t refuse! 3 years later and I am still having an absolute ball and loving learning and growing along with the team.”

Tabitha has an exceptional understanding of our concepts and is able to bring her expertise and ideas to life, we are sure that you love her work as much as we do!

SOULFUL & VERSATILE AUTUMN RECIPE

Easy & Delicious Tomato, Onion & Butter Pasta Sauce
shared by Tabitha, our Creative Designer.

Ingredients:

1x 801g or 2x 400g - tins of Roma Tomatoes
1x - Large Onion
70-80g - Butter (unsalted, salted is ok too)
Salt
Sugar

Pasta of your choice if you want to also make a pasta dish.

Method:

- Place your tomatoes into a pot

- Peel the onion, keeping the roots attached and place the onion into the pot. You can add the onion whole or cut in half, as long as the roots are attached. This makes it easier to get the onion out later on.

- Add the 70-80g butter to the pot

- Lightly season with salt

- Add a small pinch of sugar

- Place on medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer, then lower the heat to medium-low.

- Let simmer for around 45 minutes remembering to stir occasionally so it doesn’t stick to the pot.

- When cooked and all of the flavours have melded nicely together, mash the tomatoes by gently pushing them against the side of the pot until you make a nice sauce.

- Remove the Onion (sometimes it’s nice to gently squeeze the onion to get the juices from it for the sauce)

- Adjust the salt levels to your liking and add a little more sugar if the sauce is tart. (this can sometimes happen if the tomatoes or the onions are more on the tart side)

You can use fresh tomatoes instead of canned ones. They will just need a longer cooking time until they are tender and easy to mash.

Adding Pasta

- Boil a pot of water, making sure to thoroughly season it with salt (it should taste salty)

- Add your choice of pasta and cook until just cooked (or to your liking)

- Once the pasta is cooked, add 2-3 tablespoon of the pasta water into your pasta sauce and stir it through.

- Drain your pasta then add it to the sauce, stirring your pasta through the sauce to evenly coat.

- Dish up and add some parmigiano reggiano (parmesan) cheese, if you desire. A crack of black pepper is nice also. Serve and Enjoy!

If you would like to add mince to your dish, fry up your mince separately as the sauce is cooking. Once cooked through, add the meat and let the sauce continue to cook for the 45 minutes then Serve and Enjoy.

You can also add other protein to this dish as well, the possibilitiesare endless with this sauce!

Enjoy!
