Synthetic Vs Natural Myths

This may be controversial but … not all synthetics are bad.

There! We’ve said it!

We have decided to put this issue to rest by sharing some information about essential oils, absolutes and synthetics.

People have decided that all synthetic fragrances are bad because some are made cheaply using toxic chemicals. We are here to say that not all synthetics are bad and they can be useful in making a more consistent and stable product. It all comes down to how the molecules are produced.

It can be a little disturbing when people spruik on social media that all synthetics are bad, it comes down to the process used to create them and the type of chemicals used. We use natural molecules which are extracted by a chemist in New South Wales and the UK. We have them made and then carefully blend them with essential oils and absolutes.

You may be thinking why use the molecules in the first place? There are several reasons, one being animal cruelty.

An example: pure musk, which is extracted from the male deer, has been a major component in perfume for a long time, but the problem with this, illegal poaching and trading has occurred since the 19th century and continues today.

Musk is also extracted from a cat with musk civet. It is obtained from the musk pod, which is a gland under the abdomen from the gland in the pouch.

The use of pure musk cannot be considered vegan, which is why we use a synthetic musk and for the most part, the majority of modern perfumers do not support animal cruelty or killing for an essence.

As years passed, it became necessary to synthesise musk, therefore, reducing the killing and extinction of the musk deer.

As perfumers we need to learn to create perfumes through the alchemical process, using what we can from nature and some molecules to provide depth and captivating scent.

We use premium quality with all of our ingredients, creating complex scent with the wonders of nature from the plant kingdom (organic) wherever we can and where we do want to use musk and ambergris, we use synthetic molecules.

A lot of the cheaper synthetics made do contain a vast array of chemicals, however, there are more expensive molecules which used in smaller percentages, don’t tend to cause any problems.

Always bear in mind, essential oils and absolutes are classified as chemicals and contain medicinal compounds and constituents, so overuse can lead to acute toxicity if used in large volumes over a long period.

The term “essential oil” means that it contains “raw essence”, not because it is essential to good health and wellbeing, this is key to understanding why essential oils have been marketed as such, so the public will believe that they are better than anything else.

The use of essential oils and absolutes does not make your perfume more natural than the use of synthetic molecules. Our favourite saying at Malano, “It’s all about the dose.”

Everything you use, needs to be in moderation, so perfume is not designed to be bathed in or to drown yourself in.

We hope that this has cleared up any misconception's synthetic molecules and if you ever want to find out more, reach out to us via email - admin@malano.com.au

Meet the Innovators

Maryka Malano - a glimpse behind the scenes

Maryka is the Chief Perfumer and Chief Product Developer. She has had multi-faceted careers over her lifetime. As mentioned below (in our special recipe section), she is a qualified chef, having worked within the hospitality industry throughout Australia for many, many years.

Maryka also has an Associate-Degree in Life Science and developed her love and interest of perfume further through studying with an International Perfume company. She has also completed a Reiki Masters course, Life Coaching, Energy Medicine and Hypnotherapy.

Currently Maryka is studying for an Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy with a focus on Homoeopathy and Western Herbal Medicine.

Due to personal injury in 2016, Maryka, after months of rehab and feeling toxic from the medication, began reflecting with Masey on how there are so many products laden with chemicals and toxins which affect the body.

This is how Malano came to develop their own non-toxic body, bath and beauty products.

Masey Malano - a glimpse behind the scenes

Masey has been a hairdresser for twenty eight years, running an extremely successful hair salon for over twenty one years and operating since 2012 from her and Maryka’s property. When Malano was at is beginning stages, Masey was experimenting with candle waxes, wicks and scent, along with different types of vessels. This came about after years of buying candles and being unsatisfied with how they burned, their lack of scent throw and the black soot from the wick.

Eventually the candles were perfected and it was decided that Masey’s beautiful boutique salon was the perfect location to begin selling Malano’s candles. Today they are one of our top selling products.

Masey has a deep creative instinct with an interest in design. She co-designs the look and feel of each product, vessels, packaging, labels and branding that give each product line it’s own identity. Masey was instrumental in the design and development of the branding for Malano.
